The letters 'A.L.' used in Masonic dates stands for "Anno Lucis" meaning "in the year of the light". The first Grand Master elected in Ohio on January 7, 1808 was M.W. Brother Rufus Putnam. The Grand Lodge of Ohio was formed at Chillicothe, Ohio on January 7, 1808. The pen written ritual was adopted in Ohio in the year 1892. Until that point it was handed down by memory only. |

In the earliest days of speculative Freemasonry, the work of the Lodge consisted mainly of Lectures, and the symbols which illustrated them were sketched on the Lodge floor. This laborious process was replaced during the 18th century by Floor Cloths Painted with the principal symbols. |
